Three things are certain in life: death, taxes and a new iPhone arriving every year.

Ever since Steve Jobs revealed Apple’s first foray into the phone world back in 2007, the hunt has been on for a competitor to rise through the ranks and challenge it for the coveted “phone of the year” crown.

Now that we’re less than a month away from the launch of the tenth anniversary iPhone, we’ve chronicled the biggest rivals from each year – and picked a winner for each.

We're about a month away from new iPhones being unveiled, and that means all kinds of mock-ups and dummy models and supposed part leaks have been coming out. And one kind of odd thing that's popped up several times over the last week has been a new iPhone color: it's somewhere between orange and bronze and pink; it's objectively pretty ugly; and I think I really love it.

Supposedly, this year's iPhones will only come in three colors — and one of them won't be rose gold. It's safe to assume the first two colors are black and white, and it seems very possible that Apple would make the third into yet another pinkish, goldish shade (even if it doesn't actually look all that gold). The last gold and rose gold models were pretty popular, after all.

Now, there's absolutely no firm evidence yet that this bronze-ish option is actually coming to the iPhone. And if it is, there's a very good chance it'll look much bett..

A great deal has been leaked about the new iPhone. But there’s one central mystery: what everyone’s actually going to call it.

“The new iPhone” is in itself something of a misnomer: there’s actually going to be three new iPhones, all rumours suggest. That will be two models in keeping with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, which mostly focus on better internal components, as well as a completely new and re-designed phone.

With such a complicated line-up, discussion has turned to what exactly the phones will be called. And a number of different possibilities have formed.

If you have an older iPhone such as the6 or 6 Plus, shown here, you might want to wait until next year to upgrade.

If you’re still toting an Apple iPhone 5, 5s, 6 or 6s, you might want to wait a few months months to upgrade to an iPhone7.

DealNews says now is a terrible time to buy an iPhone. That’s because with the iPhone8 is expected to be released in September or October, so discounts on the iPhone 7 won’t be far behind.

DealNews keeps records of iPhone price trends dating back to 2011. Its data shows that older iPhones are generally discounted in the fall, after the latest-generation model is announced.

If you’re looking for maximum savings, you should delay your purchase of an iPhone 7 until February when you could snag one for as little as $300, DealNews advises.

WSJ claims U.S. Foxconn plant will make iPhone displays; $3B tax subsidy under fresh attack

@benlovejoy

While previous reports on Foxconn’s U.S. display factory have described it as making large panels for use in TVs and monitors, a WSJ post today claims that it will be making LCD screens for iPhones.

The facility, which would build liquid-crystal display technology, or LCD, screens used for Apple Inc.’s iPhone, would be the first of its kind in North America.

It’s unclear whether the WSJ has new information, or has made what appears to be a common error of conflating Foxconn with iPhone production.

The wisdom of Wisconsin proving a $3B tax subsidy – amounting to a full 30% of Foxconn’s investment – is again being questioned after a state fiscal analysis calculated that taxpayers wouldn’t recoup their investment until the 2042-2043 fiscal year …

Fortune 500Apple iPhones Are About to Get a Lot More UsefulBarb Darrow6:50 AM ETAn upgrade to Apple's mobile iOS operating system due this fall will enable iPhones to use the technology underlying the Apple Pay wireless payment system for more tasks.
Users of newer iPhone models, for example, may be able to use their phones as mass transit passes, security badges, or to scan products for information about their manufacture.
This is thanks to new support for near field communications (NFC) technology that Apple (aapl) disclosed in June. And that, in turn, should help iPhones do more of the things that phones running Google's (goog) rival Android operating system can already do.
Right now Apple's use of NFC is limited to its three-year old Apple Pay system which lets people make cash-free transactions by holding their phone up to an NFC reader. The new operating system tweaks will open up access to the phone's existing NFC chip to more types of applications, as noted ..

Social media users are going crazy about a little known iTunes trick that can let you jack up the volume on your audio.

It involves changing the equalisation setting while playing audio on your device. In sound recording and reproduction, equalisation is the process commonly used to alter the frequency response of an audio system using filters.

On your iPhone the EQ setting is set to ‘off’ by default. However you have the option to change it to a whole raft of different settings such as Bass Reducer, Flat, Vocal Booster or Late Night — if you want to get a little more oomph from quieter parts in music or movies.

While the trick isn’t new, a tweet by social media user called TheBae showing how to toggle with the setting has gone viral.

“How to make your iPhone Speaker louder. (Play Music while you’re doing it) Thank meh later,” he wrote alongside a pair of screenshots demonstrating how to do it.

Since being posted to Twitter a few days ago, the handy tip has been retweeted mor..
